Richard Jackson is a contemporary American artist. He was born in 1939 in California, where he grew up and studied art and sculpture (UCLA). His work varies in style and media and has made him one of the major artists of his time. Painting is an integral part of his art, since it is present both as a material and as a field of expression. He pushes the limits of the frame, flying in the face of convention. He thus combines the movement of abstract expressionism with that of action painting, creating both performances and in situ creations. His sculptures follow the principle of reappropriated use found in his painting: he designs animals through which paint enters and exits using tubes, funnels, or orifices. The sculpture Bear Head Beer thus becomes a symbolic fountain, conveying emotions or ideas. As a general rule, the artist’s work is “uninhibited”, playful, and always free.
