“Everything is submerged, on the surface of the still-murky waters. Only the inventive gaze of free beings remains; godless men, humans who are all too human.” Noël Dolla

Noel Dolla was born in 1945, in Nice, where he lives and works. For some thirty years, he has strived to answer fundamental questions concerning painting and more specifically, abstract painting. Committed to the reconciliation of pictorial and social themes, he often reduces his motifs to their essence; line as a minimal gesture in the act of painting, with the dot as its origin. They emerge in variations, sometimes invading the space or redefining it. Symbols are pervasive in his work -crosses, dots and holes – reworked, reproduced, and distorted until the theme is exhausted. In Nymphéas (Le deluge II), the artist has immerged hundreds of colorful umbrellas in the octagonal basin of the Tuileries garden. Situated near the Orangerie, this installation is a tribute to Monet’s Water Lilies.
