Jonathan Meese was born in 1970 in Tokyo. He lives and works in Berlin. The artist’s work must be considered in the context of painters - such as Willem de Kooning - who are also sculptors. Indeed it was de Kooning whose work triggered this new development in Meese’s art. The bronze sculptures he has produced since the summer of 2003 can be seen as idols. Their titles are inspired by great figures of history, mythology and culture, all omnipresent in Meese’s work. In contrast, the plasticity of the bronze representations stabilizes figure and form. Mama Johnny (Noel Coward is back) is a reference to the author and painter Noel Coward, and to the artist’s mother. The character represented refers to the statue of the Colossus of Rhodes, considered as one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
