Jenny Holzer was born in 1950 in Gallipolis (Ohio). She lives and works in New York. For more than forty years, she has presented her astringent ideas, arguments, and sorrows in public places and international exhibitions, including the World Trade Center, the Venice Biennale, the Guggenheim Museums in New York and Bilbao, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Louvre Abu Dhabi. Her medium, whether formulated as a T-shirt, a stone bench, or a LED sign, is writing, and the public dimension is integral to the delivery of her work. Created for Holzer’s recent show at GAMeC in Bergamo, Italy, the four curved Versilys Gold marble benches exhibited here are carved with fragments of text from authors she admires: Patrizia Cavalli, Pier Paolo Pasolini, and Wisława Szymborska. The Carrara White marble bench bears a line from Holzer’s early text series, Survival. Together the benches represent both an observation point and a site for rest: a space to read, meet, reflect, and perhaps begin to act.
