Jean-Marie Appriou was born in 1986 in Brest, France. He lives and works in Paris. Five cast aluminum cypress trees and four grottos creates a mysterious landscape for visitors to lose themselves in. Appriou’s work often refers to the symbolists. Here he references Arnold Böcklin’s Isle of the Dead where cypress trees carry the weight of the space between life and death, earth and sky. In caves, time is measured by calcification; the slow collection of experience creating forms. In Appriou’s grottos, human hands emerge, enacting an unnamable ritual.
