Turn Your Eyes to Sleep, 2019

    Bronze, sheet bronze
    255 x 218 x 55 cm

    Max Hetzler, Berlin, Paris, London

Ida Ekblad was born in 1980 in Oslo, where she lives and works. A life-size gate cast in bronze, Turn Your Eyes to Sleep is locked by a cartoonish bow flanked by hypnotic eyes. Two vultures perch on top, mirroring the different treatments of the textured structure which transitions from golden through copper, to earthy tones. Besides an indistinct figure on the lower left side, the gate is ornamented with poetic flowers, branches, and fragments referring to Ekblad’s “dérives” through urban spaces. Creatively combining popular culture, art history, and the everyday, the work reveals the artist’s experimental mind, and, through its title, appears as an attractive and disquieting invitation to the unconscious realm.
