Polish artist Alicja Kwade was born in 1979. She lives and works in Berlin. Revolution (Gravitas) engages with gravity as the physical force that makes possible life on Earth. The work shows the fall, the return to the point of origin. They form a two-body system, like Sun and Earth or Moon and Earth: one finds oneself on a certain trajectory, following a path that is almost impossible to leave. All people and things are interdependent, forming attractive and repellent forces upon this trajectory. Circular motion is a recurrent motif in Alicja Kwade’s work. The circle represents time and repetition. The way in which the stones are positioned also references the asteroids that circle Earth, carrying with them the potential for collision.
