Alex Katz was born in 1927 in Brooklyn. He lives and works in New York. Chance, created in 2016, is a “cut-out sculpture” that presents a group of three women bathing. It is a two dimensional sculpture made of enamelled porcelain and mounted on a polished stainless steel base. The image of these three bathers playing with a beach ball highlights the artist’s commitment to the flat, clean aesthetic for which he is renowned. The artwork is installed in one of the principal fountains of the Tuileries, playing with the perspective and ornamental alignment of the garden. The presentation of this project follows the recent exhibition by the artist at the Orangerie Museum, in which he presented artworks in conversation with Monet’s Water Lilies.
