David Nash was born in 1945 in Esher, in England. He lives and works in Blaenau Ffestiniog in North Wales.

Descending Vessel is an older sculpture, and part of a series where the artist focused less on the trunk as a column and sought to find a sweeping movement in the articulation between branches and the trunk. In his corpus, it is the tree (its trunk, branches or stump) that guides the artist, inspiring a sculpture which evolves over time as he carves it directly from the source. “They look at me,” says the artist, talking about the materials that surround him, and it is from this call, confrontation, conversation that his work will emerge.
