Martos Gallery

  • Several questions for Ebony Haynes

How would you describe the relationship between your gallery and the artists you represent?
Like family: always loving and sometimes dysfunctional.

What is your best memory of FIAC?
My best memory of FIAC was our first year here in 2017. We presented a solo booth with Jessica Vaughn, a relatively unknown and new artist for us. The work was so well received at the fair, it couldn't have been better. And it set the stage for her first New York solo show the following month, which was received with much critical acclaim. The work was not easy for a fair: conceptual, minimal, sculpture. But the FIAC attendees were patient and interested, and it was a great place to talk about Jessica and her work.

What is the funniest thing that happened to you at an art fair/in your gallery?
Riff Raff was walking around NADA Miami being filmed and stopped to talk to me, but I had no idea who he was. I thought it was a sort of was, I suppose. I am still not a Riff Raff fan.

Can you recommend cool hidden places in New York?
It's not so hidden, but I love the double decker bus tours of the city. Even though I live here, it's my favourite thing to do with family and friends visiting from out of town. I've even taken a few by myself just for fun.

What is your favourite place for lunch near your gallery?
I often recommend Lalito for lunch. It's creative Latin American food with a small comfortable atmosphere and most important, walking distance from the gallery.
