Lee Ufan was born in 1936 in Korea. Relatum, a series of Lee Ufan’s sculptures, incorporates raw, natural, and industrial materials such as steel plates, stones, and glass panes. The contrast between each element accentuates the conceptual relationship among the materials as well as the relationship of the viewers with the surrounding space, while remaining the essence of the things. As the leading theorist and practitioner of Mono-ha (School of Things) in Japan and Dansaekhwa (monochrome painting) in Korea, Lee Ufan has exhibited extensively around the world including Biennale de Paris, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume, Fondazione Mudima, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Centre Pompidou-Metz, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and many others.
