Dave Heath (1931-2016) occupies a singular place in the history of American photography. Influenced by Eugene W. Smith and the masters of the Chicago school, including Aaron Siskind and Harry Callahan, he can however be considered neither as a documentary photographer nor as an experimental photographer.

His photography is above all a way of attesting to his presence in the world by recognizing in the other an alter ego absorbed in his inner torments. He was one of the first, as early as the 1950s, to express so radically the feeling of alienation and isolation inherent in modern times. Produced between 1959 and 1961, his series in Washington Square perfectly embodies this tension between the individual, lost in himself, the tumult of the American street and the tensions of a period in American history marked by doubt. A Dialogue With Solitude, published in 1965, was one of the most significant books of the decade.
