    Director of the musée de l’Orangerie

    Since May 2017, Cécile Debray has been the director of the musée de l’Orangerie. From 2008 to 2017, she was chief curator of cultural heritage, in charge of the modern collections at the musée National d'Art Moderne / Centre Pompidou.

    She has curated a number of major international exhibitions: La Section d’or, 1912-1920 et 1925, 2000; Le Nouveau Réalisme (Grand Palais; Sprengel Museum, 2007); Elles@Centrepompidou, 2009 (Centre Pompidou, 2009/2011; SAM, 2012/13; CCBB, 2013); Lucian Freud. L’atelier (Centre Pompidou, 2010); Matisse, Cézanne, Picasso… L’aventure des Stein / The Steins collect (SFMoMA; Grand Palais, 2011; MET, 2012); Matisse. Paires et séries / Matisse. In search of true painting (Centre Pompidou, 2012; SMK; MET 2013); Marcel Duchamp. La peinture même (Centre Pompidou, 2014); Balthus retrospective (Scudiere dell Quirinal, Villa Medicis, 2015; Kunstforum, 2016); Francis Bacon / Bruce Nauman. Face à face (musée Fabre de Montpellier, June-October 2017), Derain, 1904-1914, la décennie radicale (Centre Pompidou, October 2017- January 2018) and from Dada Africa. Sources et influences extra-occidentales (musée de l’Orangerie, October 2017- February 2018).

    Besides her participation on several school juries and art contests, she curates the annual Parisian festival Viva Villa! that brings together the works of state-sponsored artists in residency from the Villa Medicis, Villa Kujoyama, and Casa de Velázquez. An art historian, she teaches at the Louvre School and has published widely on the historical avant-gardes and on modern and contemporary painting.
