    Serre Cyprès Florence, 1987

    Cypress tree, greenhouse

Patrick Saytour was born in 1935 in Nice. He lives and works in Aubais in France.

The artist took his inspiration from Hubert Robert’s Imaginary View of the Louvre in Ruins, painted in 1796, adapting it by following the processes favoured by the Supports/Surfaces group. The “poetic” presence of the cypress trees bursting forth from a partly-collapsed greenhouse develops into a satirical and theatrical reference to the art of bygone ages while avoiding any allusion to the connotations of the classical ruin. In today’s world of turmoil and disillusion, this disconcerting installation could be seen as a premonition of approaching disaster.
