Stefan Rinck was born in Hamburg in 1973. He lives and works in Berlin.

These stone figures form a disparate ensemble of animals, monsters and mythical creatures. Some are in costume, others wear masks or are named after mythological heroes. Together they form a heterogeneous population of non-humans from an ancient fictional world, woven from myths and legends. With these creatures, the artist explores a realistic but witty and fantastical rhetoric, and uses the medieval technique of direct carving to produce a lively, modern take on this iconography. These carved rocks stand proud like vertical islands, true to the original limestone block and impressive in their imposing immediacy. Rising to a height of almost three meters, with these sculptures Stefan Rinck confronts the monumental grandeur of the Jardin des Tuileries.
