Marta Pan was born in 1923 in Budapest, Hungary. She died in 2008 in Paris, France.

Originally inspired by botanical and organic forms, her work rapidly evolved towards increasingly simplified lines, to the point of abstraction. Marta Pan focused on endowing her sculptures with freedom of movement. This research reached its apogee with her series of floating sculptures. The first was created in 1960 within the framework of a commission for the Kröller-Müller Museum (Netherlands), which concerned a work destined for the park around the museum and its body of water. Marta Pan thus created “a point of encounter between architecture and nature”, designing a sculpture for a pond whose contours she likewise determined so that they would match both the sculpture itself and its surrounding environment.
