Michael Sailstorfer was born in 1979 in Germany. He lives and works in Berlin.

His new work “Kopf und Körper Paris” is an ensemble of four sculptures, consisting of two parts – a mask mounted on a concrete pedestal. This work follows Michael Sailstorfer’s previous series of masks and “Kopf und Körper” (2015 - 2016). These works are characterized by reduced stylistic features. Familiar stylistic forms in the history of art, they recall Oceanic and African Art (the symbolism of primitive masks, the exorcism of spirits, protection from demons and the like) together with the primitivism of the Classical Modern art, in this case, sculptures by Max Ernst. However, they likewise reflect a post-apocalyptic aesthetic because the masks resemble robots which could have been made from re-cycled metal, giving them an unusual science-fictional twist. This creates an additional dimension of synthetic physicality and a seemingly archaic symbolism.
