Mona Hatoum
Born in Beirut in 1952, Mona Hatoum lives between London and Berlin. Her work questions the limits of both the human body and the social body. Her unconventional representations of familiar objects often convey sensations of danger and alienation. Her vocabulary includes both organic materials such as hair and body fluids and industrial materials (wire fencing, glass panels...). "Suspended Garden" takes the form of a wall made of sand bags like those used at border checkpoints which proliferate in war zones. Nonetheless, their inhospitable surface can become the ground on which wind-blown seeds can take root and flourish.
