Mark Dion
Mark Dion was born in 1961 in New Bedford, USA. For the last twenty years he has explored the relationship between nature and culture, referring to systems of scientific classification, and exhibiting the methodological practices used in museums. Pursuing his research, "The Tuileries conservatory for confectionery curiosities", created especially for the Tuileries gardens by Mark Dion in collaboration with Dana Sherwood, takes the form of a hothouse whose form and decorative elements recall the nineteenth century style. An accumulation of brightly coloured and lavishly decorated cakes, covered by a multitude of stranded insects is presented on a table inside. The work can be interpreted as an atypical and exuberant vanity.
