Leopold Kessler

Leopold Kessler is known for his unannounced interventions in public spaces that instantly become part of their urban context. For FIAC, Kessler has designed an extended shoeshine machine for public use, to be placed in the Tuileries gardens. The conceptual core of this piece expands the function of public objects, underscoring the tension between collective and individual interests. Engineered as a collective activity yet one that is ultimately self-serving, the piece becomes an ironic exercise and a self-defeating proposition - at once, wasteful and useful.
