Tadashi Kawamata was born in Hokkaido in Japan, in 1953. The work "The Exchange Library" operates like a mobile library. Installed near the octagonal Grand Bassin of the Tuileries Garden, it contains more than a thousand artists' catalogues, aligned in no particular order on wooden shelves. Social and participative, this project required the preliminary collection of books from galleries and artists. The library functions on the basis of a system of exchange or barter. Visitors are invited to consult the available books and catalogues on site, and to exchange them with others they bring. For Kawamata, the library is also an opportunity to provide exposure for a large number of artists who would not necessarily be presented at FIAC, thanks to the books dedicated to them.
