Maria Elvira Escallón was born in 1954 in London. She lives and works in Bogota.

As part of the Colombia-France Year 2017, Colombian artist Maria Elvira Escallón – currently in residence at the Arboretum of Chèvreloup - has created a series of sculptures using tree stumps. By intervening directly on this historically charged but bucolic landscape, the artist hints at the political implications of attempting to govern nature inch by inch, as was the ambition of Louis XIV. In the piece, the wildness of rough nature contrasts with the rationality of the artisan who attempts to tame it.
