Kim Yong-Ik was born in 1947 in Seoul, where he lives and works.

His artistic quest to date has been driven by existential questions that challenge modernism, the remnants of which he believes are still deeply embedded in contemporary subjectivity.

Never succumbing to the comfort of classification within a single category, Kim Yong-Ik has maintained an independent stance amidst Korea’s rapidly changing cultural scene and the dominant artistic movements from the 1970s onwards. His work often mimics the visual language of modernism, such as abstract, painterly strokes and geometric forms. The fixed status of an artwork is challenged as the artist employs discarded objects, readily embracing natural forces beyond the painterly gesture, such as stains and dust.
