Claudio Parmiggiani was born in 1943 in Luzzara, in Italy. He lives and works in Parma.

A church bell on top of a pile of books, two emblematic elements of his practice, were once used for the transmission of information and the expression of emotions, both in ordinary daily life and for important, milestone events. The long established place attributed to both at the very heart of our society, be it rural or urban, has been challenged by recent social and technological transformations. This is suggested by the incongruous placement of the church bell, thus leading to a reflection on the passage of time.

Tied together tightly with rope that is firmly knotted in several places, the church bells and books have been silenced by the artist’s gesture. Memory, absence, silence and spirituality are all recurrent themes in the work of Claudio Parmiggiani.
