Not Vital was born in 1948 in Sent, a village of the Swiss Alps marked by the forceful presence of nature that inspired him at a very early age. He lives and works in Beijing and Sent. At the age of 18, he started a nomadic artistic life, taking inspiration from the cultures, forms and forces of the various places where he successively settled to make art: New York, India, Niger, South America. Fascinated by Chinese culture and language, almost ten years ago he chose to establish his main studio in Beijing.

At the Petit Palais, Not Vital presents HEAD, two oblong-shaped sculptures in stainless steel with a smoke-tone finish that dimly reflect the surrounding environment. Although reduced to essential lines, an intense yet elusive presence that subtly alters the atmosphere can be found in the face features. In his sculptures, Not Vital subverts traditional conventions of representation and transforms the actual material to question its meaning.
