Lawrence Weiner was born in 1942 in New-York.
His works are presented in the form of “Statements”, written on the wall or floor in giant letters. These fragmentary phrases describe simple actions or materials in an impersonal manner, engaging the spectator in a new relationship to the artwork that it is no longer a question of seeing but of understanding. At the same time, the typography and spatialisation of the word groupings composes a wonderful visual partition, alternating straight and broken lines.

For Lawrence Weiner, art is public; it engages with politics – in spaces relating to others, the community and solidarity – and always rooted in the present.

Here his work proposes a series of hierarchical categories: ‘on the up’, ‘on the above up’, ‘on the below up’ and from there, linguistically and pictorially, Lawrence Weiner disturbs the relationship between the hegemonic mass and its oppressed counterpart, suggesting that opposing ideologies are destructive but can also open up new possibilities
