Matt Mullican was born in 1951 in Santa Monica. He lives and works between Berlin and New York.

He is interested in models for explaining the world and how we charge symbols with meaning. He has developed a complex system consisting of pictograms, colours and cartographical structure to represent the world, with which he aims to portray, in symbols, every aspect of the human condition in different combinations.

Matt Mullican’s five worlds are represented by five colours: green stands for the elements, the substance of all things material; blue for the everyday world (world unframed); yellow for all that we can grasp discursively (world framed, where the arts belong to, for example); black and white for language and signs; red for the subject, the human being, his thoughts and feelings.

  • Untitled (four worlds between five), 2017

4 banners in polyester, metal cords
    500 × 400 cm (each)
Mai 36 Galerie, Zürich; Peter Freeman Inc., New York / Paris; Capitain Petzel, Berlin; ProjecteSD, Barcelona

In this artwork, each banner presents a symbol which can be read as follows (from left to right): the Subjective – our feelings, understanding and thoughts; the Sign (or language) which refers to the transfer of the subject to the world through the intermediary of signs; the World (unframed) that means the everyday world in which we live; the Elements – the substance of all things material. All the banners are black and yellow, yellow being the colour that corresponds, in Matt Mullicans codified language, to the “World Framed”, the world to which art fairs belong to.
