Justin Matherly was born in 1972 in the United States. This massive torso was inspired by the Belvedere Torso housed in the collection of the Vatican museum in Rome. Cast intricately in the ubiquitous contemporary material of concrete rather than the carved marble which gave life to its Roman ancestor, Matherly’s sculpture presents a deficient, decrepit, but extremely imposing body.
